*Moors hit with last gasp sucker-punch - by Luke Turner*
PUBLISHED: 13th Mar 18

A gut-wrenching 94th minute equaliser denied Solihull Moors all three points against 10-men Gateshead at the International Stadium.

After Rees Greenwood’s early red card, Alex Reid put The Moors into the lead before Heed equalised through Paddy McLaughlin.

Chris Lait thought he’d won it for Mark Yates’ men just moments after he’d entered the field; however it wasn’t to be as Wes York’s last minute strike deflected in off Kyle Storer.

The Moors started with intent as first Jermaine Hylton flashed a cross across goal and then Jamey Osborne got in behind down the left. The midfielder made his way into the box, cut inside and saw his shot cleared away off the line.

On the 11th minute, the hosts were reduced to 10 men. Greenwood was judged to have elbowed Darren Carter after the pair jumped up to challenge for a header. Jamie Reckord sent the resulting free kick wide of James Montgomery’s left-hand post.

Kwame Thomas then collected a high pass before setting up Carter for a long-range strike that whistled just over the bar.

It was then the turn of Osborne to drive from the halfway line before jinking past one marker and striking a shot that was dragged wide of the post.

Yates’ men made their man advantage and pressure count just past the half hour mark. Reckord delivered in from the left and it was Alex Reid who latched onto a knock-down to slot past Montgomery and give Moors the lead.

The score line was almost doubled just minutes later as the away side began to boss proceedings. Storer worked some space before curling an effort that drifted just past the ‘keepers left-hand post.

Heed then created an opportunity of their own as some neat build-up play resulted in Danny Johnson hitting a powerful shot that travelled wide of O’Leary’s post.

Half-time: Gateshead 0-1 Solihull Moors

Moors began the second-half with control of the game, just as they did in the first-half. Two chances in quick succession presented themselves as Osborne saw his shot palmed away, before Hylton curled an effort that was tipped away by Montgomery as the following pack couldn’t finish.

Hylton was again in the thick of the action as he teased his opponent, jinking one way then the other before striking a low drive that was cleared off the line.

Then, with virtually their first attack of the half, Gateshead equalised. Fraser Kerr picked out Paddy McLaughlin who met it with a volley to finish past O’Leary who couldn’t quite keep it out.

It then took an outstanding reflex save to deny Moors from re-taking the lead. A low cross was almost diverted into his own net by Kerr, but Montgomery was there to instinctively save.

The Moors then ramped up the pressure in search of a winner. George Carline set up Reid to curl just wide, before a succession of corners resulted in nothing.

With just three minutes remaining, Lait replaced goal scorer Reid and made an incredible instant impact. He was the man on hand to tap home what looked to be the vital clincher.

But, it wasn’t to be as Steve Watson’s side somehow managed to find themselves a goal that earnt them a point.

Substitute Wes York took aim from distance with a shot that didn’t look to be troubling O’Leary, but Storer stuck out a leg and diverted it past the stranded Moors ‘keeper.

There were seconds remaining which gave the visitors no time at all to create another chance as they walked away with what felt like two points dropped.
