Mark Yates reacts to Ebbsfleet defeat
*'It's one to forget and hopefully we make sure we learn from our mistakes' - by Luke Turner*
PUBLISHED: 10th Feb 18

Mark Yates is keen to ensure that Solihull Moors’ narrow defeat at Ebbsfleet United is a ‘one-off’ after the five-game unbeaten run came to an end at Kufflink Stadium.

Luke Coulson’s second-half goal produced the game’s one moment of quality as The Moors failed to reach the same level of performance as they had done in previous weeks.

Yates said: “It was a horrible day, horrible pitch and two teams looked evenly matched – there was nothing in it. I don’t think they were good, I don’t think we were good.

“They had one moment of quality that won them the game. I’ve never faulted the players’ effort; just today we didn’t produce the quality that we needed to.

“We had a few good moments. When they scored, we were actually in the ascendancy. We’ve got to keep believing in what we’re doing.

“We said when we walked in that there would be ups and downs. Today is one of those times where we’re all feeling down.

“The lads have been fantastic so far and we’ve still got 14 games to go. Unfortunately we didn’t get anything out of the game today.”

Solihull had a two-week break in between their victory at Dagenham & Redbridge and today’s defeat, however Yates doesn’t believe that the period off affected his players.

“I don’t think so, it’s nothing to do with that. It reminded me of Spennymoor in terms of the quality of the pitch and our performance just didn’t have any quality.

“They’re on what’s been described as a poor run. They shored it up and made sure they were solid, hard to beat. Then the sub came on with a bit of quality and scored – you’ve got to give them credit for that.

“We’re just disappointed that we didn’t really get going. Our set pieces only had one real delivery of quality in the first-half where Darren’s (Carter) put in it and we thought Kwame (Thomas) might have done better.

“Apart from that, we’ve drifted balls out of play and it just summed us up. We’ve had a bad day at the office and we’ve got to move on quickly.

“It was one of those games where there was nothing in it. Both teams kept kicking the ball out of play but they came up with the moment of quality and won the game.

“We’re disappointed for the fans who have made the long journey down, but it’s just one to forget and hopefully we make sure we learn from our mistakes. We want to make sure we’re a damn sight better next week.”

And despite the team failing to create enough going forward, Yates was relatively pleased with how his side defended against their opponents.

“I don’t think they caused us any problems really,” The manager continued.

“They were going to get the odd delivery into the box with playing wingbacks but we dealt with everything ok.

“In the second-half, we were in the ascendancy. They had to change it to stem the tide and match us up a little bit, but we didn’t really press our advantage that I thought we had at the start of the second-half.

“It was just a bitty, horrible performance.”

Back-to-back home matches against Dover Athletic and Wrexham are next up for Moors, with Yates eager to bounce back with positive results at The Automated Technology Group Stadium.

“Next Saturday is the most important game of the season just because it’s the next game of the season.

“We’ve just got to make sure that one defeat doesn’t become two defeats. That’s the main aim as we stand now.

“We’ll get back on the training ground in the week, work on a few things and just try and prove that it was a one-off.”
