A first-half hat-trick from James Lawrie sent Solihull Moors out of the Birmingham County FA Senior Cup after a second round 3-1 defeat to Hednesford Town at The Automated Technology Group Stadium.

Akwasi Asante gave The Moors a glimmer of hope, as he pulled a goal back with the scoreline standing at 2-0, but it was Rob Smith’s men who progressed to the third round.

The visitors made the perfect start, taking the lead on the five minute mark. A cross into the box was met by a header that crashed off the bar, before Lawrie tapped in the rebound.

Hednesford continued to apply pressure and almost made it two just a couple of minutes later. Goalscorer Lawrie in the thick of the action again, whipping in a corner for Charlie Gatter who headed inches wide.

The Pitmen did indeed double their lead with 20 minutes on the clock. A shot was well blocked by Moors defender Joel Kettle, but it fell to Lawrie who beat Charlie Bannister to net his second of the game.

Mark Yates’ men had a job on their hands and they finally sprung to life when Asante played in Callum Coyle who shot narrowly wide of the post.

It could have easily been three for Hednesford after Joe Fitzpatrick curled in a free-kick that evaded everyone and hit the far post, before going away to safety.

Romario Martin, fresh from his first senior appearance and goal for St. Kitts and Nevis on the weekend, then played a neat one-two with George Carline and unleased a strike that was well saved by James Wren.

It was then the turn of Coyle to try his luck once again. Some smart footwork set him up for a curling shot, but Wren was again equal to it and saved well.

With four minutes left to play of the first-half, The Moors pulled a goal back. Martin pulled the ball back to Asante who made no mistake, firing past Wren and into the back of the net.

The scoring for the half didn’t end there as Hednesford went straight back up the other end and made it 3-1. Jordan Graham played in Lawrie who fired into the top corner past Bannister to complete his hat-trick.

Half-time: Solihull Moors 1-3 Hednesford Town

After an eventful first half, the second-period passed by with no real efforts on goal as the game began to get scrappy, which suited the away side.

The Moors struggled to create anything of real significance as Hednesford managed the game to their wanting – a flurry of substitutions in quick succession not helping the tempo.

Smith’s side threatened to make it four with just over 20 minutes remaining. Some good football saw Tom Thorley cross towards Joey Butlin who wasn’t quite able to get on the end of it.

As the game reached the final 10 minutes, Solihull looked for that one opportunity to get them back into the tie.

Mikkel Hirst made his way to the byline before cutting the ball back into a dangerous area for Ashanti Pryce who saw his shot blocked.

Bannister was then called into action as Danny Glover set his sights from 30 yards, the Moors keeper did well to watch the ball all the way to save well.

The final few minutes passed and Hednesford held on comfortably to progress into the next round of the Birmingham County FA Senior Cup and send Solihull Moors packing.
