*Bennett as good as Rooney! - by Ronald Crane*
PUBLISHED: 4th Dec 17

Wayne Rooney was extolled in the press for a magnificent goal scored against West Ham United last week. It seems the former England Captain managed to score from his own half of the field of play. At The Hub last Saturday Moors Academy FC Captain, Dylon Bennett managed to score from his own half! One could say, “Anything Wayne Rooney can do, Dylon Bennett can do better!” but I shall refrain from doing so.

Right from the first whistle it was obvious that this young Moors side was more than up for the challenge presented by a Continental Star side in transition. The difference in quality, class, fitness, tactics and organisation was great. To their credit, Continental Star did try to play the game. If they began relying on the long ball tactic, this changed with Devonte Sterling appeared just before Half-Time. He gave the home side the ability to progress through mid-field. But by then the game was out of reach. Even so, the Stars found life difficult with Dylon Bennett in mid-field, running the whole game with an ease that belied his lack of years.

After five minutes Moors had managed to reach the Bye-Line behind the home defence on four occasions, so it came as no surprise when Ashanti Pryce put the visitors in front. Te-Jay Robinson crossed from the left, Ashanti’s shot was saved, but the forward made no mistake with the rebound. Moors progress along their own left flank was to be a source of worry for the Stars all afternoon.

Star did not resort to the rough stuff, but continued to try and play the game as it should be played. They do have some useful players, but truth to tell, they were totally out played and the six goal margin in no way flattered the Moors.

With thirty minutes gone, Josh Parsons hit a shot from distance. The Goalkeeper saved the ball, but then watched helpless as the ball rolled under his body and – oh so slowly – into the net to double Moors lead. Kyle Mullally, who had tried on a number of previous occasions to score from distance eventually got his name on the score-sheet when he turned in a cross from the right.

After the break, the game continued as in the first half. Josh Parsons did wonder if he ought to have won a Penalty, but Referee Neil Jones was having none of it. Then the outstanding moment of the game. Continental Star’s Goalkeeper James, needlessly rushed out of his goal area and hit a long clearance. It fell to Dylon Bennett well inside his own half. With the ‘Keeper stranded up field, the Moors Captain hit a high looping shot that bounced into the net with the ‘Keeper, and the Star bench, shouting “Oh No!” Dylon Bennett will not score many goals better than this one.

With the home side tiring, the Young Moors pressed home their advantage. Adam Bourne, who had arrived as a seventy ninth minute substitute, side footed a wonderful pass from another substitute, Shuja Mahmood, into the net.

There was still time for Blessing Nhundu, whose movement had been troubling the Stars all game, to hit the bar. With four minutes to go, he scored the goal his all-round play richly deserved, with a fierce shot from Moors right.

It was a job well done, and Moors Academy progress to meet Knowle FC away in the Quarter Finals of the Smedley Crooke Memorial Charity Cup. The date for this match is still to be decided.
