Silkmen Too Smooth for Moors
PUBLISHED: 9th Sep 17

The heavens had opened a couple of hours before play started but yet again the superb drainage at the Automated Technology Stadium gave no clue to the inclement weather and  the pitch was perfect  as Moors strove to build on their success earlier in  the week when they hosted Chester.

George Carline was missing from the squad following the crunching tackle earlier in the week whilst Ben Fox, on loan from Burton Albion, made his debut for Moors.

The visitors pressurised from the start with Wilson bringing out an early save from Nathan Vaughan after a decent through ball from Durrell. Liam Daly thwarted Toure’s shot before Vaughan produced the save of the match as he dived to stop Wilson’s point blank tap in from another dangerous cross courtesy of Durrell.

It took Moors 25 minutes before they launched their first meaningful attack as Ben Fox put Oladapo Afolayan through but Keeper Jalal was equal to both the shot and then the follow up from Tahvon Campbell. Afolayan tried again from 20 yards but caused no problem for Jalal.

On the half hour mark a Durrell corner was loose in the box but Richards hit the side netting, whilst Joel Kettle was a whisker away from Carter’s free kick with nine minutes left.

The final action of the opening half fell to Wilson who headed Whitaker’s cross wide for Jordan Liburd to clear

0-0 at half time was perhaps a little fortunate given the amount of possession afforded to the Silkmen.

The game resumed much as the first half had ended, this time with Whitaker seizing on Toure’s cross although the shot was easily blocked. Afolayan gave Jalal his first real test of the day as he blasted from a tight angle but the ball richochet off the keeper onto the roof of the netting.

With Moors now very much in the game, referee Gibbons awarded Solihull a penalty in the 53rd minute for a foul by Richards on the advancing Afolayan. Darren Carter hit the spot kick towards the near corner of the net but Jalal had guessed right and produced a good save. As the picture shows, the tackle was in fact outside the box.

Moors continued to press in their best spell of the match; Daly sent a free kick into the Macclesfield wall, whilst the lively Kalern Thomas rounded Jalal but could not find the target from a tight angle.

The game nose dived, however with just over an hour played when the speed and artistry of Wilson, who had been a hand full all afternoon skipped passed two Solihull defenders and coolly slotted the ball beyond Vaughan. 0 - 1

Thomas shot wide before Campbell went close but over on 72 minutes, whilst as the visitors pressed, Liam Daly blocked out Toure who looked to have the goal at his mercy. Afolayan had  a perfect cross from Fox but headed straight at the keeper.

Fox had Moors best shot of the game on 88 minutes as the ball looked to have booked a place in the top right hand corner of the net but the agile Jalal was there again , pushing it to safety with his best save of the day

Four minutes added time came and went as did Moors hopes of building on Tuesday’s performance.

On Tuesday they travel to Woking for another National League match. Woking lost 3 – 1 away to Maidstone today and sit in ninth position in the league with 12 points. Moors are third from bottom with 7 points
