Solihull Hold Title-Chasing Wolves Women at Hampton FC.
PUBLISHED: 14th Mar 17

Wolves are vying with Loughborough Foxes for the Midlands Division One title, so Solihull were the underdogs going into this fixture. Back at home for the first time in over 130 days, Solihull competed in the early minutes with Wolves, keeping to their jobs and organising themselves well from front to back.  Both teams were committed to the match but there were few chances to report from the first half, with the game a very even and at times, quite scrappy affair.  Wolves were looking for the opener from the left-footed delivery of Anslow and the pace of Cross, but Solihull dealt with them both very well  creating opportunities at the other end through set pieces taken by Courtney.   0-0  half time

With Solihull expecting a change of gear from the visitors, they took the game to Wolves and put them immediately under pressure, pressing them high and not allowing them any time or space to get out of their half. Twice in the opening 10 minutes of the half, Solihull nearly opened the scoring; first, hitting the post, and second, a goal line clearance by Wolves.

Wolves managed to weather the attacks without conceding and the next 20 minutes saw half-chances for both sides. On 75 minutes, the best chance of the game came to Solihull; Davies picked the ball up the edge of the box and beat two defenders, but pulled her shot just wide of the post. Wolves came close in the last few minutes and it took a goal line clearance from White to keep the tie at a point each.  0-0  full time

Sarah Westwood on the match:  "You can tell by the reaction of the players how much this point and a clean sheet meant to them. We've worked so hard to turn things around and this game has proved what we've been telling the girls - anything is possible if you work together and believe in yourselves. I am delighted to get a 'bonus point' from the match. It's no secret that we are in a relegation battle - I did not target a point from this game and wanted a performance - I got both! Today was a real team effort. I'd also like to congratulate Abbie Taylor and Jess Howard on their debuts today - welcome to the team!"

Woolley, Courtney, Hargreaves, Grieve, Unitt, Harmison, White, Taylor (Jones, 50'), Dickinson (C), Gutteridge (Howard 72'), Davies. Subs unused:  Bovan
