  • The club was originally formed in 1898  as Manor Works FC They were the works team of local business Crittall Windows, and the club's nickname "The Iron" also comes from this source, reflecting the company's metal window frames.

 

  • In 1921 the club changed its name to Crittall Athletic FC and soon afterwards moved to a new stadium (which has been their home ever since and today is appropriately named the Iron Mongery Direct Stadium). Around 1968 the club changed name again  to Braintree & Crittall Athletic FC, but when links with Crittall ended in 1981 they became Braintree Town FC.

  

  • The oldest timber-framed barn in the world is at Cressing Temple near Braintree.  The huge Barley Barn was built in about 1206 AD by the Knights Templar, and stands next to a more recent structure well, Wheat Barn was erected in 1256.These days the complex hosts events, including weddings

 

         Braintree have never been relegated in their entire existence with this season probably the most nerve racking since they were promoted to the top flight in 2010/11. In fact just last season they finished third in the league losing out to Grimsby in the semi final of the play offs. Interestingly they were managed by the Cowley brothers who left at the conclusion of the campaign to take over at Lincoln

 

  • Braintree dates back over 4,000 years. People in the area during the Bronze and Iron Ages built houses near the River Brain, known as the Brain Valley. Braintree is in Essex,10 miles north east of Chelmsford and 15 miles  west of Colchester. Bishops Stortford, in footballing terms is only a stones throw away although in Hertfordshire.

 

  • Famous sons and daughters of Braintree include The Courtauld family one of the most prominent families in the town during the 19th century during which time their highly successful silk business made them very rich, and provided much employment in the area.  Also from the town are  the actor Rupert Everett, Steve Harley singer / composer and founder of Cockney Rebel, lived in Bradford Street, Olly Murs  was educated at Notley High School for five years and actress Charlotte Rampling of Georgy Girl and The Night Porter fame, was born in Braintree in 1946
