Birmingham & West Midlands Ladies 4 - Solihull Ladies 2
26.02.2017 FA Women's Premier League @ Tamworth FC
Solihull travelled to Tamworth FC, a neutral ground for
both teams, and had to contend with playing against the wind in the first half,
and with no recognised goalkeeper in the squad. The match played out in a very
similar fashion to the first encounter; early goals for West Mids and a good second half
performance from Solihull who dominated but were not clinical enough.
early injury to influential vice captain Salter, meant a shuffle of the back 4
for Solihull, and a handling error in the first minute saw
them under pressure straight away. West Mids were playing
very direct football - long and wide to utilise their pace up front
- and they found themselves 3-0 up at half-time. Solihull created some
half-chances and dominated possession overall, but with the wind hindering
their advances, they were unable to get a goal back in the first 45 minutes.
resurgent Solihull came out fighting in the second half. They
controlled and dominated the middle of the pitch and the final third for long
periods of the match, but again struggled to be clinical in front of goal. A
change of formation saw Solihull go 3 at the back but against
the run of play overall they were unlucky to concede a 4th goal on the counter
After seeing a very
decent penalty shout waived away, the team dug in even more to keep
battling to get something out of the second half, as everything so far had been
directly at the West Mids keeper. Davies
had worked tirelessly up front and in the last 10 minutes managed to
create space on the edge of the West Mids box and with the
momentum of the wind her shot looped over keeper Fisher. 4-1 West Mids.
pressure came from Solihull and a free kick was awarded on the far right of
the pitch. A beautiful delivery by Dickinson was curled straight into
the net and made the score line more reflective of the second half performance
Westwood: 'We weren't good enough in the first 45 minutes and gave
ourselves a lot to do. The second half was a much better performance, scoring
two goals which reflected the girls character and determination.
However, we can't win matches by performing for one half only - we need to go away and think about this before
the next match away to Loughborough
Students on 5th March.
