Did you know?

·         So what is United about Torquay?. Well it was formed in1921 when Torquay Town merged with Babbacombe with the new club joining the Southern league. Since that time they have always played at “Plainmoor” which today has a capacity of 6500.They were elevated to the Football League in 1928 at the expense of Aberdare Athletic who failed in their request for re election. That club was dissolved a year later.

·         Torquay play in yellow shirts and blue shorts with their away kit of black and white stripes and black shorts. They are managed by Kevin Nicholson who took over from current Barrow supremo Paul Cox in 2015. Their nickname is “The Gulls” of which there are quite a few if you eat on the promenade!

·         Torquay have never been higher than the third tier of English Football although they were runners up in the Third Division South in 1958 and a good spell in 1967/69 almost saw them challenge for promotion to Division Two (what today we know as the “Championship” ) This is their second spell in Non League in recent years

·         Torquay have had their fair share of big name managers: Frank O’Farrell (who went on to manage Manchester United), Bruce Rioch, David Webb, Cyril Knowles, Neil Warnock, Roy McFarland, Leroy Rosenior and Keith Curle

·         Lee Sharpe of Manchester United fame started at Torquay before being sold for a club record in 1988 of £185,000. Keith Curle and Steve Bould were two more ex Torquay players who went on to play for England after a spell at Plainmoor

·         Famous folk from Torquay include Agatha Christie, Peter Cook (of Dudley Moore fame), Martin Turner (founder of Wishbone Ash) and more recently comedienne Miranda Hart
