Dover Downed By Moors 3 - 2
Solihull Moors 3 - 2 Dover Athletic
Date: Sat 17th Feb 2018
Attn: 679

Solihull Moors twice came from a goal down to clinch a deserved three points against seventh placed Dover Athletic in a thrilling encounter at the Automated Technology Group Stadium.

It was substitute striker Alex Reid who scored a late winner after Moors twice fell behind against the run of play.

After a cagey start, the first opportunity of the game came in the seventh minute to midfielder Kyle Storer who saw his shot deflected over after good work down the left by Jamey Osborne and Adi Yussuf.

But it was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when striker Anthony Jeffery was tripped by Storer as he made his way into the area. Dover marksman Ryan Bird scored the resulting penalty with a firm strike down the centre.

Moors looked to hit back immediately and they did not have to wait long for an equaliser as Storer made amends with his first goal for the club on 28 minutes, latching onto a loose ball from a Tyrone Williams throw-in and hitting it first time into the bottom corner.

The home side continued in the ascendancy and created an opportunity on 35 minutes from an Osborne set-piece which Liam Daly nodded back across goal only for Yussuf’s near-post strike to be saved by the legs of keeper Mitch Walker.

In added time at the end of the first half, Yussuf was again in the thick of the action as he pulled the ball back for Osborne to hit a fierce shot from the edge of the box which was acrobatically tipped over by Walker.

Half-time: Solihull Moors 1-1 Dover Athletic

After a quiet opening to the second period, the game sprang into life in the 56th minute after Kwame Thomas was brought down as he threatened down the right in a challenge which earned the Dover full back Femi Ilesanmi a yellow card. From the free kick, Darren Carter’s floated delivery was headed goalwards by Fiacre Kelleher and as the visitors tried to clear their lines, Osborne reacted first but his shot was deflected wide.

In a frantic spell, the Moors took residence in the Dover penalty area as a Carter corner caused an almighty goalmouth scramble and again Osborne picked up the loose ball to blast an effort onto the bar as the Moors claimed a penalty for handball.

But just a minute later the Moors inexplicably found themselves 2-1 down when a hopeful punt down field was headed back across the penalty area by Williams straight to Mitch Pinnock, who slotted it home.

Once again, Moors rolled up their sleeves and searched for an immediate response. First, the influential Osborne latched onto a second ball from a deep free kick and fizzed a shot over the bar, then a lovely run and through ball from Carter found Yussuf in a central position 25 yards out but his smart turn and shot was well saved low down by Walker.

The introduction of Reid for Jermaine Hylton in the 67th minute provided fresh legs for the Moors against a tiring Dover defence. The pressure yielded a penalty on 73 minutes when Osborne was bundled over as he made a foray into the box. Thomas duly despatched the spot kick down the middle for the equaliser.

The home side continued to attack and Carter saw two long range shots test the keeper while Osborne had another snapshot blocked before the winner arrived with seven minutes remaining on the clock. A ball in from the left found Carter bursting into the penalty area and he squared to Reid who calmly checked the ball onto his left foot and stroked it into corner of the net.

Moors saw the game out without further alarm to seal a win which was more comfortable than the final 3-2 scoreline suggested.
