Moors move to within touching distance after victory -

Solihull Moors claimed a vital three points in their bid for National League safety by beating FA Trophy semi-finalists Bromley at the Automated Technology Group Stadium.

Goals from Kwame Thomas and substitute Alex Reid gave Mark Yates’ men all three points in a well-fought encounter.

The Moors started on the front foot and almost took the lead with just three minutes played. Jamey Osborne played a smart ball through the gap to Thomas who just nicked in ahead of David Gregory, before his toe-poke was cleared off-the-line.

It was then the turn of Adi Yussuf who found himself free in the box after latching onto Liam Daly’s header, but his shot failed to hit the target as he scuffed wide.

The positive start for Mark Yates’ men paid off as Solihull took the lead after 13 minutes. A deep free-kick from Darren Carter was met by the towering head of Daly at the back post who nodded back across goal to Thomas who finished from close range.

The visitors responded well to going behind and began to take control of possession. Max O’Leary had to be at his best as Luke Wanadio played in Brandon Hanlan through on goal before forcing the Moors ‘keeper into a low save as he palmed the ball past the post.

With little goalmouth action as the half entered its final five minutes, the Moors looked to catch their opponents off-guard with a quick free-kick. Carter and Jermaine Hylton combined before the latter turned his man and forced Gregory into a smart low save with his feet.

Half-time: Solihull Moors 1-0 Bromley

The second period began as the first started with the two sides seeing little to separate them both. Wanadio threatened down the right for the Ravens, but his low driven cross was met by O’Leary who did well to hold on.

Moors then broke at pace just minutes later as Thomas took down a high ball before picking out Osborne who had time to weigh up his options. The midfielder dwelled for too long and was closed down as he struck a left-footed effort high over the bar.

With 25 minutes left of the game, Solihull had a golden chance to double their lead. Kyle Storer’s flick found its way to Yussuf who closed in on goal, only to find Gregory in the way as the stopper got down low to thwart the Moors man.

After Yussuf was brought down just outside the area, Jamie Reckord’s resulting free-kick zipped just wide after taking a deflection on its way through.

Gregory was then judged to have handled outside of his area which gave Yates’ men another opportunity to strike a free-kick from almost the exact same position. Daly stepped up this time and smashed his shot straight into the wall.

Neil Smith’s side continued to probe and worked the space well as Adam Mekki found himself on the outside of Tyrone Williams before unleashing a fierce effort that flew over the bar.

All the play was in the Moors half as the home side had to withstand plenty of pressure in the remaining minutes. A dangerous cross was headed just wide as the players breathed a sigh of relief.

Then as the game entered its final few seconds, Solihull Moors made the game safe through Reid. The attacker made the most of a loose ball, before lobbing Gregory to send the home end into raptures with virtually the last kick of the game.

Full-time: Solihull Moors 2-0 Bromley

Next up for Solihull is a trip to FC Halifax Town this Saturday (24th March – 3pm). Yates’ men still remain in the bottom four but are now level on points with Hartlepool United and Barrow.
