Dagenham & Redbridge 1 Solihull Moors 3

*Debut delight for Adi Yussuf as Moors march on! - by Luke Turner

Solihull Moors continued their outstanding run of form as they picked up another crucial win away from home at play-off chasers Dagenham & Redbridge to stretch their unbeaten run to five games.

Two goals in the first 12 minutes from debutant Adi Yussuf and a second-half finish from substitute Oladapo Afolayan ensured that Mark Yates’ men picked up all three points at Victoria Road.

The home side started lively and conjured up the first chance of the game. Danny Sparks whipped in a dangerous free kick that fell to the feet of Fejiri Okenabirhie who could only shoot wide.

The Moors then went straight up the other end and took the lead on the eleventh minute with virtually their first attack of the game. It was Yussuf who picked the ball up, moved inside the penalty area and then drilled an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner.

Little more than a minute later and the lead was doubled. The ball was crossed into the area by Kristian Green and it was Yussuf who met it and gave Yates’ players the dream start.

The visitors then began to take control of proceedings as first Jamey Osborne drove forward and forced Mark Cousins into a comfortable low save, before Jermaine Hylton tried to work his way into the box before crossing into the ‘keepers arms.

It was then Hylton again who tried his luck, this time picking up the ball after some good work from Darren Carter before curling an effort that didn’t quite dip in time as it sailed over.

With just under 10 minutes to go to the break, Moors had a golden opportunity to make it three. Carter delivered a superb corner to Liam Daly who was unmarked at the back post, but the centre back skewed his header wide.

The hosts pulled a goal back through Okenabirhie with 40 minutes on the clock. The winger spun on the edge of the area and unleased an unstoppable effort that flashed past O’Leary and into the back of the net.

That goal gave the Daggers a second wind as they looked to equalise before the break. Morgan Ferrier started to look lively as first he flashed an effort wide, before then forcing Fiacre Kelleher into a last ditch block.

From the resulting corner, Bondz N’Gala rose highest at the near post and directed a header that cannoned back off the far post as Moors just held on going into the break.

Half-time: Dagenham & Redbridge 1-2 Solihull Moors.

Solihull began the second half with promise as Yussuf, Hylton and Jamie Reckord linked up well down the left-hand side before the latter drilled in a great cross across the face of goal that Kwame Thomas couldn’t quite connect with.

Yussuf then got onto a ball in behind that Ben Nunn couldn’t deal with. Unfortunately for The Moors, the cutback was passed straight into the arms of Cousins.

Some more build up along the left then resulted in Reckord getting in behind before slicing wide as Yates and his coaching staff looked to squeeze more out of their side.

Dagenham found chances few and far between despite being the side on the hunt for an equaliser.

Afolayan replaced Yussuf on the 70 minute mark and made a remarkable instant impact. A ball over the top was latched onto by Hylton who took a delightful touch over the defender, before turning inside and out and setting up Afolayan on a plate who made no mistake tapping home – the two-goal lead was restored!

And it could’ve been four just moments later. A free kick was delivered onto the head of Thomas who rattled the bar and Hylton failed to divert the rebound home as he hit wide.

Moors\' number 10 then departed the field for Opi Edwards and the Bristol City loanee almost replicated Afolayan’s instant impact, as he flicked an Osborne cross straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.

O’Leary was barely tested in the Solihull goal as he watched Corey Whitely curl a free kick just high and wide of bar and post with just a few minutes remaining.

The man in the Moors net did, however, find himself scrambling as his side failed to clear the ball before it rolled just wide of the post with a fingertip touch.

The away side still went in search for that fourth goal and it almost came. Afolayan picked the ball up before striking from 20 yards and forcing Cousins to palm to safety.

The full-time whistle then blew as Moors claimed their second win on the bounce and their fourth in five games! The gap between them and Barrow outside of the relegation zone now stands at just one point.

Full-time: Dagenham & Redbridge 1-3 Solihull Moors.
