Solihull Moors 3 -  1 Maidenhead United

The visitors for the first game of 2018 were Maidenhead United, as Moors looked to kick off the new year with a win, and keep the momentum going after an impressive away victory over Barrow just 48 hours earlier.

The first chance of the game came after 10 minutes and fell to the home side. Hylton beat his man on the wing and his driven cross found Carter, but he screwed his shot wide from the edge of the area. Moors continued to press, and from a Jamey Osborne free kick, Liam Daly headed straight at Carl Pentney.

Osborne came close again for the hosts after 26 minutes. However, his half volley from just outside the area was too close to Pentney, and the goalkeeper claimed it at the second attempt. Jermaine Hylton should have put Moors ahead just after the half hour mark. He found himself in space in the box, but his low shot was brilliantly saved by Pentney before Osborne’s rebound went out for a corner. From that resulting corner, Kwame Thomas met the delivery with a glancing header, but it went inches wide of the far corner.

Moors went close again from a corner, but on this occasion Liam Daly’s header was comfortably saved at the near post. Maidenhead had their first chance of the game after 40 minutes. An Adrian Clifton pullback found its way to Harry Pritchard, but his shot flew harmlessly over the bar.

Maidenhead were reduced to 10 men just before the break, as Adrian Clifton was shown a straight red card after he caught Osborne in the face. But that wasn’t the end of the red cards, as Osborne was then given his marching orders following a second booking. That was it for the action in the first half as both sides went into the break a man down.

Moors almost went ahead immediately after the restart. Hylton pulled the ball back for Carter, but his shot went just over the bar. Against the run of play it was Maidenhead who took the lead through Moses Emmanuel. Harry Pritchard crossed and found an unmarked Emmanuel who headed through the legs of Sheridon Martinez.

Moors again went close, this time through Oladapo Afolayan. Jamie Reckord’s low cross found Afolayan in the box but his effort forced Carl Pentney into a smart stop and the rebound from Jermaine Hylton was blocked.

Afolayan did get his goal in the 63rd minute. He picked up the ball on the halfway line, beat his man on the wing, before cutting inside and firing an unstoppable shot into the near post. And Moors weren’t finished there. Darren Carter put the home side in front with a moment of magic. He took one touch on the edge of the area before curling a beautiful shot into the top corner to turn the game on its head.

Afolayan helped himself to his second of the afternoon in the 72nd minute. Jermaine Hylton worked his way in to the box before finding Afolayan in space who drilled his shot past a helpless Carl Pentney to put Moors 3-1 up. Maidenhead were looking to respond but Moors were restricting their visitors to half chances, Harry Pritchard came close for the away side, but his tame effort was easily saved by Martinez.

Somehow Sean Marks failed to pull one back for Maidenhead from point blank range. The big center forward had acres of space in the box but lost his footing at the crucial moment, and Martinez was able to gather.

It finished 3-1 to Moors, who kick off 2018 with a brilliant win.
