It was back to business for Moors following last Monday’s terrific win in the Buildbase FA Trophy over Tranmere Rovers. The visitors for Saturday’s Vanarama  National League match were Boreham Wood who started the day seventh in the league table and occupying the last of the play off positions. Moors fielded Jack Storer up front on loan from Birmingham City whilst Liam Daly made his 200th appearance for the club.

Jamey Osborne has an early chance having robbed Murtagh but his shot, from distance, was an easy take for shot stopper Grant Smith. Kwame Thomas was an early casualty as he came off worse from a battle with Turley giving Oladapo Afolayan a start after just 20 minutes.

Hot shot Andrade shot wide on 22 minutes and Moors could have been in trouble when Kristian Green’s back pass was intercepted by the Portuguese striker but his curling effort was just wide of the far post.

With the half hour mark approaching Storer had his first shot at goal after a decent cross into the box from Jamie Reckord but the resulting corner was cleared. The on-loan striker then went close as he collected a knock down from Daly, but Smith produced a diving save to keep the score level. Reckord’s speculative 35 yarder after a goal mouth clearance from Smith was just over the bar.

The “Wood” did manage to get the ball into the net on 43 minutes as Stephens met Andrade’s corner but referee Yianni blew for a foul on Darren Carter whilst in added time Storer’s free kick from outside the box had Smith at full stretch but he pushed the ball away for a corner with a fingertip save

Goal less at half time was a fair reflection of play

Moors were immediately on the front foot as play resumed. Osborne ran at the visitor’s defence but his chip from 25 yards was wide, whilst Daly went close as he met Carters’s corner. Shep Murombedzi’s penetrating cross was turned around the post. Andrade was the last man as Boreham Wood broke on the hour, but his dangerous screw back counted for nothing as the referee blew for a goal kick.

Mark Yates decided that Storer had had enough for his first outing and brought on George Carline in his place on 65 minutes. Osborne, dictating play from midfield, put Afolayan through but the shot was agonisingly wide. The Grimsby man was then booked for an off the ball incident with substitute Jeffers as emotions ran high.

The elusive Andrade picked up Reckford’s miss timed clearance, but Max O’Leary saved brilliantly from point blank range whilst Afolayan on the end of Fiacre Kelleher’s flick rounded Smith only to see Stephens clear the goal bound shot off the line. Wood’s captain, Tom Champion, cleared Moors bar after a goal mouth scramble

Right at he death Jamey Osborne’s curling corner almost went in at the far post, Murombedzi’s 20 yard cross/shot was cleared for a corner and as Boreham Wood broke, Andrade was denied again by the ever-alert O’Leary

Three minutes added time was played out uneventfully. The match was hard fought and a point for each team appropriate. It had been a real battle against the high-flying visitors and apart from that elusive goal, manager, Mark Yates was pleased with his squad’s performance.

Moors travel to Maidenhead (11th in the league) on Boxing day, KO 3.00 pm and next Saturday for the last game of the year, it’s the long haul to Barrow again KO 3.00 pm (They are 19th) Then on New Years Day, Maidenhead make the return visit to the ATG Stadium (3.00 pm)

Moors remain bottom of the league with Guiseley getting a point against Aldershot, Torquay having no game and Chester thumped 4 – 0 by Halifax. Then it is a six-point gap before the resurgent Leyton Orient.
