Moors 1 Gateshead 1 Moors denied by ten men Tynesiders
Solihull Moors 1 - 1 Gateshead

LISHED: 26th Nov 17

A second half onslaught was not enough to secure all three points against a Gateshead side reduced to ten men on the brink of half time.

After a quiet opening period at the Automated Technology Group Stadium, the game turned in the visitors\' favour on 12 minutes when referee Paul Marsden pointed to the spot after a challenge from Moors skipper Darren Carter on Russ Penn which looked to be outside of the area. Jordan Burrow sent home debutant goalie Max O\'Leary on loan from Bristol City - the wrong way from the resultant penalty.

A few minutes later Heed almost doubled their lead when Richard Peniket\'s effort deflected off Liam Daly and rebounded off the post.

The Moors gradually found their way into the game but could not find a way through the resilient visitors\' backline. A strike just wide from the industrious Courtney Richards midway through the half was the sum total of the first half.

Just before the break, a late lunge on Carter resulted in Penn receiving his marching orders and leaving Gateshead to reorganise formation.

The Moors were frustrated in the early exchanges of the second half as they tried to make their one man advantage pay against the hard-working Heed defence. The lively James Bowen was finding joy down the left flank and he tested keeper Dan Hanford with a low shot on the hour mark.

With momentum firmly with the Moors, the equaliser came in the 65th minute when Richards floated in a delicious cross which was met with a superb glancing header into the top corner by Wesley Atkinson, a defender signed from Rushall Olympic just 24 hours earlier.

Gateshead responded immediately and it was only a determined block by Daly which prevented Burrow from scoring.

Spurred on by the introduction of Dapo Afolayan, Moors continued to press for a winner but could not find the finishing touch to a series of attacks.

After a nervy four minutes of injury time, Gateshead manager and former Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion stalwart Steve Watson was relieved to leave with a point on his return to the Midlands.
