Moors left the Racecourse ground with pride intact and heads held high after an inspiring second half performance, Solihull have lost by the odd goal in both their previous appearances in North Wales and so it proved to be again as Wrexham climbed to the top of the table and Moors went back to the bottom.

The home side had the first chance on 7 minutes when Reid met Holroyd’ s chip but headed wide and keeper Dunn had no bother with George Carline’s response moments later after excellent work from Kwame Thomas. Fiacre Kelleher made a superb clearance on 15 minutes when t Wrexham looked to open their account.

With the game evenly poised at the half hour stage Wright rose highest to a corner only to see James Bowen clear off the line. Nick Townsend saved well from Carrington whilst Pearson also missed a close-range header from another corner with the ball hitting the outside of the upright.

The only goal arrived with 5 minutes remaining before half time – a corner was half cleared and as Townsend came out to clear he appeared to collide with another Moors player and the loose ball fell to Rutherford who lobbed the unfortunate Solihull keeper for his first goal for his club. Fortuitous at best but when you are struggling lady luck so often appears to desert a team!

Kelleher was quickly into action as Wrexham resumed on the front foot with a monumental tackle to deny Reid, but the visitors were starting to look menacing. Kelleher went close on 55 minutes receiving the ball from Asante but his left foot shot was just foiled by the diving Dunn. Carline played a delightful one-two with Darren Carter, but the shot was agonisingly wide. On 68 minutes Carter chipped the ball to Thomas but it was inches too far forward for the on-loan striker to convert.

When Afolayan replaced George Carline, Solihull effectively had four strikers running at the Wrexham defence although in a rare break with 8 minutes remaining, Kelly might have put the match to bed as Townsend rushed out of his area to quell the danger but Kristian Green was one step ahead and blocked the shot.

Thomas was replaced as the final whistle beckoned following a clash but despite being the better team in the second half Moors could not break through with the equaliser they deserved. It was a relatively quiet night for shot stopper Nick Townsend.

The performance, coupled with the draw at Maidstone last Saturday, suggests Moors are turning corners as they seek to put points on the table but this weekend’s home match against Gateshead is another vital match for Solihull. Kick off is at 3,00 pm at the Automated Technology Group Stadium
