Aldershot Town 1 - 0 Solihull Moors
Date: Sat 2nd Sep 2017

Aldershot have made a steady start to the season and are contenders for promotion at the end of it. Moors with Liam Daly back in central defence and with loan signing Zain Westbrooke on the bench, were in desperate need of kick starting their campaign to avoid a gap at the lower end of the division. With Kalern Thomas and Dan Cleary back in the starting line up Moors went for an attacking 5 – 3 – 2 format.

Kristian Green put Oladapo Afolayan through right at the start after a good run down the left flank from Kalern Thomas but it was the hosts who almost unlocked the game when a blistering shot from Kellermann brought out an equally brilliant save from Nathan Vaughan.

However, Solihull had no one to blame but themselves as the “shots” got the only goal of the match on nine minutes; Rowe’s short corner was crossed to the far post by Taylor and Fenelon with oceans of space had an easy tap in from 5 yards – it would be his last kick of the match as he seemed to pull his hamstring in the process.

Tahvon Campbell got the better of Fowler on 20 minutes but his shot was blocked. Cleary was booked for an innocuous  tackle on Rowe on the edge of the box but the free kick was foiled by Vaughan as it curled towards the far corner. With Solihull now back in the thick of some end to end play Afolayan put Campbell through but keeper Cole was quickly off his line to clear. Campbell’s shot on 32 minutes was deflected for a corner.

Tempers flared when strong tackles between Thomas and Alexander resulted in a melee on the half way line resulting, quite rightly, in both players being booked. McDonnell went wide just before the whistle whilst Rowe was off target in the fourth minute of added time.

1 – 0 at half time flattered the home side.

Right from the restart Paul Green was on for Thomas as George Carline put Afolayan through to no avail whilst Kristian Green’s high cross landed on top of the net.  The hosts caught Moors on the break and only the quick thinking of Vaughan saved the day as the Moors shot stopper raced out of his box to clear the danger. Aldershot responded with Taylor skimming the bar whilst Kellerman’s attempt was thwarted before he could shoot.

Darren Carter skied the short corner from Afolayan after a good interchange down the left flank between Green and Carline, whilst Rowe was just off target on the hour mark with a thirty yarder. Vaughan produced a fine punch out to stop to stop Gallagher getting on the end of Alexander’s cross.

On 69 minutes Westbrook came off the bench to replace Carter and the away fans saw enough to see the potential on this young midfielder as his penetrating passes added another dimension to Moors build ups. That said Aldershot were still a threat with the impressive Bobby Joe Taylor left up front to spear head the breaks; his 20 yard screamer on 75 minutes only saved by the outstanding Vaughan.

Moors best chance of the match came on 76 minutes when Fiacre Kelleher point a pin point cross to the far side of the box but as Afolayan arrive fractionally late he hit over the bar with the keeper nowhere.

It finished as it had been right through the match – attack and counter attack and although Aldershot scrambled the ball into the net at the death it was correctly dismissed by referee Middleton for a blatant hand ball.

This was a match Moors should have drawn at the very least but falling for a simple set piece early on sealed their fate. On the positive side, Liam Daly galvanised the defence, Westbrooke has much to offer and Paul Green relished his role in mid field. Nathan Vaughan was a rock!

The home game this coming Tuesday against fellow strugglers Chester is a must win situation for Moors. Kick Off is at 7.45 pm at the Automated Technology Group Stadium.
