Solihull Moors 3 Barrow 3 Attendance 558
Solihull Moors 3 - 3 Barrow
Date: Tue 15th Aug 2017
Time:
Attn: 558
Location:

Conditions for Moors first home game of the season could not have been better. Barrow had made the long journey down the M6 and a glorious warm summer’s night greeted the players as they took to the pitch

Moors, still troubled by injuries to a number of players, welcomed on loan striker Tahvon Campbell in his first game for the club – Liam McDonald decided to play him up front in a dual strike force with Tristian Dunkley. In the back line Dan Cleary teamed up with Fiacre Kelleher and Joel Kettle.

A dangerous cross from Jordan Liburd just evaded Dunkley but from the corner Darren Carter found the head of Kelleher but was wide. Connal Trueman could only parry a long throw from Jones but there was no Barrow player on the back post to take advantage.

Liburd played a peach of a through ball to Campbell on 17 minutes but with a potential one on one, he could not control the pass.

Just as Moors looked to have setled they were undone by a stroke of luck by the visitors; a free kick from distance landed in the 18 yard box and despite being cleared  it hit Nieskens straight on and rebounded with pace into the back of an empty net. 0 – 1.

Moors responded positively with Campbell going close near the goal line but  they were soon in trouble again from a 40 yard free kick from Jones after Darren Carter’s rash tackle; seeing Trueman off his line, he delivered a pin point strike which was in the net before the Moors keeper could get back. 0 – 2.

Moors managed to stem the tide before half time; Campbell was proving a handful in the Barrow area but when he got a clear shot it was straight at Moore and the Barrow keeper saved easily

Two down at half time, although not an accurate reflection of the opening 45, did suggest that Moors might have something in their arsenal to hurt the Bluebirds, but Liam McDonald’s half time talk would also need to address the unnecessary goals which had been given away.

It was a much better strategy from Moors which was apparent right from the start of the second half. Gone was the long ball to be replaced by fast build ups from defence to the two front men, culminating early on in Dunkley being dispossessed before a one on one with Moore and a George Carline header going inches wide. However things were about to get better for the home side when Dunne was red carded for elbowing Joel Kettle.

On the hour mark Carter delivered a precision corner and Kettle rose highest to score Moors first goal of the night with an unstoppable bullet header.1 – 2

With Afolayan on for Dunkley and Luke Benbow for Jack Edwards, Solihull  went searching for the equaliser which duly arrived on 69 minutes after superb skill and a pull back from Benbow found “Dapo” who smashed the ball beyond Moore. 2 – 2.

Five minutes later Carter exchanged a one  - two with Benbow and the Moors Captain hit a well judged  shot from outside the box , giving Moore no chance. 3 – 2.

Benbow went wide with a curler on 85 minutes and Kalern Thomas then unleashed a screamer from at least 40 yards which Moore did well to push over the bar.

It was inevitable that Barrow would have something left in the tank and 6 minutes of added time proved to be too much for Moors  as a goal mouth struggle in the very last minute  resulted in a penalty for the visitors, duly converted by Panayiotou 3. -3.

Manager McDonald could be forgiven for being delighted with his teams come back despite the late equaliser and they  now look forward to the visit on Saturday of Halifax Town KO 3.00 pm. Halifax sit fifth from bottom in the league but Moors vacated the basement slot with their one point.
