Solihull Ladies 2 TNS 2
Saints Preserved - Just!

Yesterday saw Solihull host The New Saints at sunny Hampton FC in the season finale. Solihull happy to be safe in the league; wanted to end on a high, whereas TNS still had a chance of finishing third if they could breakdown the Solihull defence.

Kicking off at 2.30pm, Solihull enjoyed an explosive start, really pressuring the visitors from the offset; the attacks came in thick and fast but frustratingly no goals. After the initial excitement the tempo of the match then changed a little with both teams enjoying periods of possession but also defending fiercely to deny the other any breaks. TNS came close with their forward Jones hitting the post, to which Solihull responded with some well worked team attacks which finally resulted in a goal for Jeffries (36’).

As we geared towards half time, Solihull were still on the up, making all the right moves on the pitch just unable to finish.

1-0 at half time.

As the second half got underway it was Solihull making themselves known on the pitch, a dubious offside call saw Davies’ leap and net denied in the 52nd minute. TNS seemed to them pick up some momentum from their lucky escape and started to drive forward more, despite some solid defending from Solihull, TNS found a gap and Ridge slotted one in on the 57th (1-1).

Changes were made by both sides, and the game lulled a little as the teams switched around. Soon TNS were on the attack with a superb cross from Bebbington which saw Ridge tap in a second on 76 (2-1). Disappointing for Solihull who had been the better team.

However they didn’t rest and continued to push on in the final 10 minutes, with a well-timed cross from Courtney falling to Davies for her to fire home, a beautiful goal. 84’ (2-2)

Solihull continued to dominate but couldn’t find a final goal to take all 3 points.

FT: 2-2.

A well fought display from the Ladies and a decent spectacle to see off the season and indeed life as ‘Solihull Ladies’. Next season sees the Ladies merge with Solihull Moors to become their Official Women’s branch; we’ll be sharing more information over the coming weeks, so stayed tuned as we move into a new era for the club.

Sarah Westwood on the result:

“I would like to thank all of the supporters that turned out yesterday to enjoy a really hard-fought match. We are gutted we couldn’t secure the three points in front of our home support - we should have been out of sight in the first half, but, it was a great performance to end the season with and to build on in pre-season, in 6 weeks’ time. Thank you to everyone who has supported us this season; we look forward to welcoming you back as we enter our new era as Solihull Moors Ladies FC!”

Solihull:  Parkes, Hargreaves (Taylor 66), Unitt, Dickinson (C), Grieve, Howard (Courtney 70), White, Davies, Jones, Harmison (Gutteridge 80), Jeffries. Subs unused:  Brown, Plumb
